Two Madison dentists recently were honored by the Indiana Dental Association.

Dr. Benjamin Canida received the 2014 Rising Star Award, and Dr. Thomas Kennedy received the 2014 Lloyd J. Phillips Distinguished Service Award.

The annual service award is presented to dentists who have performed outstanding service to advance the objectives of the profession or service within the community, state or country.

Kennedy provides donated dental services to girls in Cambodia through CIY, Christ In Youth, a faith-based organization best known for their youth conferences and mission trips. He was introduced to CIY by his daughter Madeline, in 2010 and has visited Cambodia four times since.

The award given the Canida recognizes a young dentist who has been practicing for 10 years or less and demonstrates outstanding leadership abilities and initiative. Canida is a third generation dentist, an active member of the IDA and an active member of the Southeastern Indiana Dental Society.

He continues to serve as a delegate to the IDA House of Delegates and has served as the Southeastern Indiana Dental Society secretary and treasurer, as well as a representative to the IDA's New Dentist Committee.

The Indiana Dental Association (IDA) is the state's largest dental association, serving more than 2,800 member dentists and their patients throughout Indiana.
