An ogre-sized musical filled with swamps, magical kingdoms and fairy tale characters turned on their heads will come to Madison this weekend.

Madison Consolidated High School will put on "Shrek the Musical," bringing the magical fairy tale world to life on stage.

The musical-comedy follows Shrek, Donkey and a cavalcade of fairy tale creatures in a quest to save Princess Fiona.

The show, according to theater director Aaron Kelsey, is largely based on the movie with original songs written for the Broadway show.

Work on the musical began in January.

"We've worked four or five days a week since January. We first learned the songs, then we worked on the acting parts, then the dancing," Kelsey said. "You kind of work on all the pieces separately, but at the same time, and in the last four weeks we've started to put it all together."

Show times are Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for students. $10 for adults and $5 for balcony seats.

The school will also host a Shrek Swamp Party for elementary-aged children from noon to 1:30 Saturday before the matinee show.

Kelsey said the party will have food, games and crafts. Characters from the show will also be there to take pictures and sign autographs.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are $10 in addition to the play ticket.
