Vevay's downtown merchants plan to kick off the First Friday of the month with several activities celebrating Independence Day.
The "Red, White & Blues" event begins at 6 p.m. with live musicians playing throughout downtown Vevay.
Darryl Hewitt will be playing blues and classic rock on West Main Street near Creative Images. Mark Louden will play alternative and soft rock on Ferry Street in front of the American Legion.
Switzerland County Tourism will present "Dancin' on Liberty Street" with The Doctors' Band performing from 6 to 9 p.m.
The nine-piece Doctors' Band plays classic rock and soul from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Members include: Joe Perkinson on vocals, guitar and keyboard, James Stanley on vocals and keyboard, Ken Harding on guitar, George Alcorn on bass guitar, Chris Watson on percussion, Tom Kennedy on trombone, Rick Bennett on saxophone, Mark Johnson on trumpet and Dave Butler on trumpet.
Liberty Street is located between the Visitors Center and the Switzerland County Courthouse.
The live music is free and open to the public. Lawn chairs are recommended for the event.
Switzerland County Tourism also will host a "Show Your Flag" scavenger hunt. The event is free and all ages are invited to participate.
Although Switzerland County proudly displays an American flag, a Swiss flag also flies to honor the area's historic roots. Businesses participating in the event will hand out sealed envelopes that contain either an American or Swiss flag.
Unopened envelopes should be delivered to the Visitors Center no later than 8 p.m. where officials will open the envelopes to reveal the flag inside.
Participants with one of the six American flags will win a prize. All non-winning entries will be placed into a drawing for the chance to win an additional prize.
Maps of businesses participating in the hunt will be available. Only one envelope will be allowed per family or group per business while supplies last.
Art galleries plan to stay open extended hours during the activities. The Community Art Center of Switzerland County, 217 Ferry St., will feature exhibits by Richard Drake and Bradley Cox.
As usual, free carriage rides will be offered as weather permits. Visitors are asked to board at the Courthouse.
First Friday events conclude at 9 p.m.
A Fourth of July Cornhole Tournament will be held on Liberty Street in Vevay. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a guaranteed first place price of $100.
The entry fee is $10 per team.
The first-place prize will include 50 percent of the collected entrance fees, with the second place team earning a prize of 30 percent of the entry fees. The third-place team will receive 20 percent of the entry fees collected.
Pre-registration can be done at the Switzerland County Visitors Center, 128 W. Main St., or at This & That Homemade Creation Gift Shop, 402 Ferry St.
On-site registration on Liberty Street will be accepted until 5 p.m. on the day of the tournament. Registrations will not be complete until the entry fee is paid.
All participants must sign a release and acceptance of rules entry form.
Cornhole players of any age may participate, but any team members under the age of 21 must have paperwork signed by a parent or guardian who agrees to contest rules.
