'Girlfriend' gives voice to those who didn't quite fit in
Thursday, February 07, 2013 10:00 AM
A rock musical takes the stage this month at Actors Theatre in Louisville as part of the Brown-Forman Series.
Two teenage boys - one a social outcast and the other a jock - explore a relationship during the summer after high school graduation in the production of "Girlfriend," an Actors Theatre release said.
The musical, based on a book by Todd Almond and set to the songs of Matthew Sweet's pop album of the same name, gives a voice to those who grew up in small towns, didn't quite fit in and found self-discovery anyway.
The musical premiered in 2010 under the direction of Les Waters at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California, the release said.
"I adore this musical," Waters said in a release. "'Girlfriend' is full of these perfect pop songs that Todd Almond has brilliantly transformed into a touching and genuine story about all the joys and terror of falling in love."
Waters currently serves as the artistic director of Actors Theatre in Louisville.
Also joining Waters are two actors who starred in the musical at Berkeley. Ryder Bach plays "Will" in the production, and Curt Hansen portrays "Mike." Both actors make their Actors Theatre debuts in "Girlfriend."
"We have a fantastic cast, and incredibly talented all-girl band and a creative team who are in love with this piece as much as I am," Waters said. "It's very joyous, very sweet and it has a huge heart."
The cast will be joined on-stage by a four-piece band featuring Jyn Yates on drums, Kelly Richey on guitar and Sara Lee on bass. The group is led by Actors Theatre Musical Director Julie Wolf.
The musical will be on stage at Actors Theatre's Pamela Brown Auditorium until Feb. 17. The performance lasts about an hour and 20 minutes.
Tickets for the show are available by calling the Actors Theatre Box Office at (502) 584-1205 or online at www.actorstheatre.org. Prices and times vary for the production.
