A world-premiere musical comedy opens Saturday as part of the Children's Musical Theatre Series at Derby Dinner Playhouse.

"Princess Penelope's Dragon" helps to teach the audience about the importance of being honest. The production is most suitable for children ages 3 to 12.

The show transports theater-goers to a kingdom where subjects are ready to celebrate Princess Penelope's birthday, a release said.

Penelope, who is loved and admired by all, tries to live up to expectations and be perfect all the time.

Yet, when she make mistakes, Penelope blames everything on her imaginary dragon instead of taking responsibility. Things get complicated once Penelope's imaginary Dragon actually shows up.

The musical gives an updated take on the "Boy Who Cried Wolf" and takes a look at honesty, plus earning trust and friendship, the release said.

"Princess Penelope's Dragon" was written by Matt and Tina Jo Wallace with music composed by Derby Dinner Playhouse's musical director Scott Bradley. The show features songs including "Hide and Seek," "My Dragon," "The Royal Guard Blues" and more.

The production's cast includes Carly Stotts as Penelope, Sandra Rivera as Dragon, Sally Scott as Kate, Chris Bryant as Simon the guard, Kevin Crain as King and Kyle Lueken as Smith. The show is directed by Matthew Brennan.

All public performances of the production will be held on Saturdays through June 21. Breakfast performances will be held at 9 a.m. with a lunch performance at noon. The show includes kid-friendly menu options.

Tickets are $16. Tickets may be purchased by calling (812) 288-8281 or online at www.derbydinner.com.
