Friday marks the return of the annual "Watermelon Mania" in Carrollton as part of the city's First Friday celebration.

First Friday, organized by the Carrollton Main Street Program in partnership with the Riverview Farmers Market, includes special downtown business sales, a farmers market, giveaways, live music and activities for kids.

The free events are held on Court Street from 4 to 8 p.m.

The signature event, the watermelon cooking demonstration, will be held between 6 and 8 p.m. in front of the Carroll County Public Library, 136 Court St. In the past, participates have used watermelon in dessert dishes and beverages.

The annual watermelon seed-spitting contest will follow the demonstration at 7 p.m. The winner of the contest will receive $20 in Downtown Dollars gift certificates.

Visitors also can sign up for a Downtown Dollars giveaway. The drawing is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and Downtown Dollars will be awarded in $10 increments.

There will be an inflatable for kids during the activities.

The Tri-County Ramblers will perform from 6 to 8 p.m. in front of the library.

Carrollton's First Friday series will finish in September.
