DAR HONORS LOCAL STUDENTS

Top: Macky Hecox of Madison Consolidated High School, Andrew Ott of Shawe Memorial High School and Elizabeth Stark of Southwestern High School, (left to right) each received the 2013-2014 Good Citizen Award from the John Paul Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Each awardee submitted recommendations, school transcripts, a summary of accomplishments and had to write an essay. This year's essay topic was "Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It: How Does One's Personal Heritage Affect One's Duties to Our Nation?"
Bottom: Deputy Elementary School fifth-graders Owen Cardinal, Dustin Cox and Caroline Bechman (left to right) are the winners of the DAR American History essay contest. All local elementary schools were invited to participate in the competition. This year's topic was "The Lives of Children During the American Revolution." The students read their essays and received their awards during a reception at Madison Presbyterian Church on Tuesday.
