Chris Shelton was appointed as the new Jefferson County Council member Tuesday night in a caucus of Republican precinct committee members.

Shelton will fill the term of Dr. Kevin Britt who resigned his position last month because he moved out of the area he represented. Britt was elected in 2010.

Shelton, a graduate of Madison Consolidated High School, will represent District Two, which includes precincts of Graham, Milton, Monroe, Smyrna, Shelby, Lancaster and Madison townships.

Shelton holds an associates degree in business and bachelors degree in management from Indiana Wesleyan University.

He is a new product development manager at Super ATV in Madison and previously worked for Arvin Sango for 17 years. He has more than 20 years of experience in manufacturing and 15 years in program management and budgeting responsibilities.

"Representing and working for my fellow Jefferson County neighbors on County Council is a great honor and I am very excited about this opportunity" Shelton said in a new release.

Shelton was elected and has served as a Republican precinct committeeman since 2004. He is an active member of Hanover Masonic Lodge and North Madison Church of Christ.

He and his wife, Melissa, have two children, Eric and Karisa.

Shelton will be sworn in today at the Courthouse.

The County Council will meet Sept. 11, 12 and 13 as part of its annual budget review session.
