Southwestern High School seniors huddled just outside of the gym Friday evening in preparation for their final minutes as high school students.

Within the hour, 90 Southwestern graduates would shift their tassels and begin the next phase of their lives. Of the 90 graduates, 35 received honors diplomas.

The class valedictorian was Kristal Yates, and Sarah Anderson was the salutatorian.

In her salutatorian address, Anderson said it will be strange to not enter the doors of Southwestern next fall and see her fellow classmates.

"Don't forget about the memories we have made here, but let's be excited to make many more as we travel in different directions," she said. "This place will always be where it all began, but I am excited to see the amazing things you all will do."

While giving the class history, Samantha Ison recognized fellow classmate Michael Perry, who was scheduled to graduate this year until he was involved in a near-fatal wreck in August.

"Because of the previous accident, we were determined to make every moment count this year," Ison said.

Perry spoke to the large crowd shortly after the Class of 2014 filed into the gym.

Heavily involved in athletics, he reminisced about spending time with his fellow classmates during practices.

"Whenever I did have my accident ... those people were all there for me. They visited me; prayed for me," he said. "And that's the way this senior class is. They're all great people like that."

Absent from commencement ceremony was senior Bethani Kleopfer, who was competing in the Indiana state track and field tournament. Kleopfer holds the school's shot-put record.

High school principal Jeff Bates encouraged the outgoing seniors to make good decisions in the future and "listen to your conscience."

"The more we listen to our conscience, the stronger it becomes. And if we value that voice inside us, it becomes easier to listen to," he said.
