Shortly before 5 p.m., a pick-up truck driven by James T. Bagshaw, 55, of New Albany, was traveling west on State Road 62 toward Hanover when it went left of the center line and into on-coming traffic, according to Indiana State Police Trooper Chris Tucker.
Bagshaw's vehicle crossed the eastbound lane and went off the southside of the road where it struck a utility pole. It spun off of the pole and struck a car driven by Phillip G. Wright, 73 of Madison, that was eastbound on State Road 62.
Bagshaw's vehicle then struck the front-end of a guardrail that went through the driver's compartment, ejecting Bagshaw out the rear window of the truck. Bagshaw was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wright and his wife, Esther, 81, a front-seat passenger in the car, were taken to King's Daughter Hospital where they was treated for minor injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts.
Jimmy Dimmitt of New Albany, a passenger in Bagshaw's truck, was treated for minor injuries on the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
Tucker said the use of marijuana and alcohol contributed to the cause of the crash. Toxicology results are pending.
