Carrollton man charged in theft from Harris Farms
Thursday, December 06, 2012 10:00 AM
Law enforcement arrested a Carrollton man after his employer reported a possible theft from his business that occurred over several months.
Juan Carlos Perez, 34, of Carrollton, was arrested Monday after his employer at Harris Farms reported to police that he saw Perez with the stolen property. Perez was charged with theft by unlawful taking over $10,000, a Class C felony.
Heath Harris, an owner of Harris Farms, went to visit Perez at his home because Perez was leaving his job of 13 years to return to Mexico. Harris told police Perez was very nervous when he spoke to Harris and wouldn't let him in the home.
Harris had suspicions that Perez took items from the business, so Harris stayed on the property and watched as Perez began loading tools into his truck and car. While watching Perez load items into the vehicle, Harris called the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, a news release said.
Carroll County Sheriff's Office, Kentucky State Police and the Carrollton Police responded to the scene. Perez was still loading items into his vehicles when Carroll County Deputy Clay Cable arrived.
"He had accumulated these things between probably 18 months to two years," Cable said. "He would apparently take a few things each day."
Police recovered boxes full of tools, a cooler full of tools, a weedeater, a chainsaw, hand tools, power tools and cleaning supplies in a 1997 Ford Ranger and a 2002 Ford Mustang, the release said.
Perez was planning to drive the truck to Mexico while a friend would drive the car. The other person was not charged and is not believed to be involved in the theft.
Perez remains lodged in the Carroll County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash bond.
