A series of controlled burns begin today at the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge.
Brian Winters, with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said burns will run through April 15. People might see smoke coming from the direction of the wildlife refuge, Winters said, but that they shouldn't be alarmed.
Winters said the controlled burns reduce the level of fuel that could contribute to a hazardous and uncontrolled wildfire.
