Hanover man, 68, dies after falling from boat
Courier Staff Report
Monday, April 28, 2014 11:00 AM
Officers are investigating the death of a fisherman at Hardy Lake near Austin on Saturday.
Herschel Dale Horine, 68, Hanover, was fishing at the lake with his wife, Wanda, when he fell from the boat and became unresponsive.
He was taken out of the water by his wife and other boaters nearby who saw the incident occur.
Horine was taken Scott County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Conservation Officer Jim Hash said Horine was trying to get his line loose from debris in the water. After pulling on the line for a bit, Horine fell into the water and became unresponsive, Hash said.
The coroner's office has not planned an autopsy, Hash said, and the death is being attributed to natural causes.
Horine was a 1964 graduate of Southwestern High School. He retired from the Indiana State Police in 2001 as a Master Trooper after 29 years of service. He later served as supervisor of security at King's Daughters' Hospital. He also worked as a real estate agent for 10 years with Hoosier Hills and Cliff Robinson Realty.
Officers are still investigating the incident and have no cause of death at this time.
The Indiana State Police Honor Guard will conduct an escort to Liberty cemetery near Hanover on Thursday after the funeral service.
