The Madison Historic Board of Review approved proposed changes to four different buildings Monday.
Jeff, Peggy and Eric Phagan's plan to install a new side staircase to the outside of their art gallery, Gallery 115 Café, at 115 E. Main St., was unanimously approved by the board.
The Phagans have been making additions to the art gallery since they purchased the building.
"You see this as something you have to continue to work on," preservation planner Camille Fife said to the family.
The building has a staircase attached, however it is too steep, and the family wanted to replace it.
The family was also awarded the Preservation Hero's award by the board. The award was presented to the family by Mayor Damon Welch.
"We just let (the building) be what it was going to be. It is what it is," Jeff Phagan said. "We didn't want to force it."

The board also approved changes to a home owned by Sally Brown at 415 Roosevelt Ave. She is replacing two front and two side metal-framed windows with vinyl, and a storm door with a full light storm door.
A non-historic home at 1245 W. Second St., owned by Edgar Wright Jr., is having its sliding doors replaced with double leaf swing doors.
Darrell Sampson had a 24-by-26 foot addition to his home at 719 W. Third St. approved by the board. The one story addition will have a gabled roof with asphalt shingles and will have a set of wood patio doors facing the back yard. The addition will stick out from the side of the house by approximately three feet. However, the board approved the addition because the Sampson said what is planned won't be seen from the front of the house.
