For the fourth consecutive year, Lydia Middleton Elementary School won the Primary Spell Bowl.

Lydia Middleton beat Rykers' Ridge by three points, with a final score of 55.

Last year, the teams tied for first place.

The two teams were tied after the first round, but Lydia Middleton led the rest of the way, carrying a perfect score into the sixth of eight rounds.

Each team, made up of first-, second- and third-graders, had 20 seconds to spell each word given by announcer and Madison Consolidated High School Spell Bowl coach LeAnne Eberts.

During each of the eight rounds, the students were given seven words to spell while a proctor checked and scored the work at the end of each round.

Students were given 500 words to study in preparation for the Spell Bowl.

Jennifer Colen, one of Lydia Middleton's coaches, said the team held practice two to three times a week.

"They also practiced every night at home," she said. "We did a lot of drills. A variety of things like spelling games, drills, partner drills."
