ICE CLOSES SCHOOLS: A layer of ice coats the fence that surrounds the Madison Consolidated Schools bus parking lot on Wilson Avenue this morning. This latest bout of winter caused another round of school closings in the Courierarea. (Staff photo by Ken Ritchie)firstname.lastname@example.org)
Freezing rain and snow contributed to some power outages in the area overnight and into today, but few other weather-related problems were reported.
Duke Energy reported 37 outages in Jefferson County this morning.
All Courierarea schools were closed.
The National Weather Service reported just over an inch of precipitation - rain and snow - fell overnight in Jefferson County. A travelers' advisory was expected to expire at noon today.
Temperatures were expected to drop throughout the day which could create slick spots on roads.
While traffic was slowed, there were few incidents in the Courierarea. City, county and state road crews worked overnight on both the Indiana and Kentucky sides of the Ohio River.
Duke Energy reported about 2,500 outages across Floyd, Clark, Harrison and Crawford counties.
The forecast for the remainder of the week calls for temperatures in the mid-20s. There is a 40 percent chance of snow on Saturday and Sunday.
Other parts of Indiana didn't fare as well.
The National Weather Service reported about 7 inches of snow in Indianapolis and Terre Haute, with more than 8 inches in Fort Wayne. The heaviest snowfall reported has been nearly 10 inches in western Indiana's Parke County.
Travel on Interstate 74 in southeastern Indiana was tangled by a jackknifed semi and slick conditions that left drivers unable to make it up a hill.
The eastbound and westbound lanes were closed for a time this morning in the stretch between Batesville and the Indiana-Ohio state line because of the semi wreck.
