This year's Special Olympics Polar Plunge at Deam Lake in Borden may prove to be the most polar yet.
The annual fundraiser is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, and will involve Special Olympics teams from the region, including a team representing Jefferson and Switzerland counties.
Last year's event raised about $2,000 for the local organization, which had about 20 participants scampering through the frigid 40-degree water.
But like most everything this year, the bitter cold and icy conditions may play a factor.
"The coordinator just drove past the lake and said it was completely iced over," said Amy Gatke, fundraising coordinator and special education teacher at Madison Consolidated Schools.
Gatke said four teams already have withdrawn from the event because of extreme cold, putting the fundraising level lower than usual. There are about 24 teams from southern Indiana that are eligible to participate in the plunge at Deam Lake.
The proceeds collected from the plunge help fund annual Special Olympics events. The plunge is the largest fundraising event of the year. The local chapter holds events in the fall and spring and includes athletes from all age groups.
The local team's website and online pledge drive can be found at www.firstgiving.com/soindiana/polar-plunge-2014-borden.
Day-of registration for the plunge begins at 9 a.m.
Students can register for $50 - or $75 if they want a T-shirt. Adult registration is $75, which also includes a T-shirt. Those younger than 18 can participate with consent from a parent or guardian. All participants must sign a waiver before stepping into the water.
During the plunge, participants are asked to make a short loop in the water before exiting the water. Indiana State Police diving crews stay in the water for assistance and there will be a warming center on site.
