Charlotte Ellison

Charlotte Jo Clem Ellison, 76, of Carrollton, Ky., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

She was born July 10, 1937, in Bedford, Ky., to Joseph E. and Sada L. Harmon Clem. She retired in 2010 from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office and was a former employee of the Accounts Payable Department at Carroll County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the First Apostolic Church of Carrollton, Ky.

She is survived by her husband, James Devon Ellison; one sister, Deborah Howard of Carrollton, Ky.; and one cousin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, James B. Clem; one half-brother, Gifford Clem; and one sister, Catherine Louise Clem.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Apostolic Church of Carrollton, Ky. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery of Carrollton.

Friends may call at the church Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Connie Griffith

Connie Lynn Griffith, 63, of Madison, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at her residence.

She was born July 13, 1950, in Jasonville, to James and Bernice Miller Griffith. She graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's degree and in 1976 with a master's degree in education, both from Indiana State University. She worked with the Madison Area Special Services Unit since 1978, and had been the executive director for the last 12 years. She was named Special Education Teacher of the Year in 1976 and was recognized by the Indiana House of Representatives with a resolution. For four terms, from 1989 to 2003, she served as a member of the Indiana Education Certification and Licensing Commission, having been appointed by Governors Evan Bayh and Frank O'Bannon. Prior to being named executive director, she was a consultant for the emotionally handicapped and president of the teacher's union. In 2003, she was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by O'Bannon. She was also a former teacher at E.O. Muncie Elementary School. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church. She enjoyed flower gardening, gourmet cooking and her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Michael F. Schafer, whom she married Dec. 27, 1980; one daughter, Felicity Lynn Schafer of Madison; one brother, James Griffith of Linton; one sister, Elaine Wile of Linton; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Everett Michael Schafer, who died Sept. 29, 2012; one brother, Michael Griffith; and one sister, Toni Griffith.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Lytle Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. The rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Tommy Mefford

Tommy Mefford, 84, of Carrollton, Ky., died Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at his residence.

He was born March 31, 1929, in Ghent, Ky., to Frank Thomas and Lottie Skirvin Mefford. He retired from Richlawn Farms in Carrollton, Ky., after working for more than 38 years in farming. After his retirement, he worked in the Golden Burley Warehouse in Carrollton, Ky., during the winter. He was a member of Whites Run Baptist Church were he had served as deacon and church secretary.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Mefford; one son, Danny Dale Mefford of Prospect, Ky.; one daughter, Rita Ann Wilson of Carrollton, Ky.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Susie Dora Mefford Dermon and Mary Elizabeth Mefford Ritch.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home in Carrollton, Ky. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Carrollton, Ky.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Andrew Niccum

Andrew Carl "Andy" Niccum, 62, of Madison, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, in Madison.

He was born Dec. 6, 1951, in Scottsburg, to Ernest C. and Elizabeth Anna Huffington Niccum. He was raised in Deputy and was a 1970 graduate of Shawe Memorial High School. He attended Ivy Tech and furthered his education in electronics. He worked for 18 years at Magnavox in Fort Wayne. He then worked for eight years at Print Pack in Greensburg. He retired from Arvin Sango, where he had worked in production for 15 years. He was a member of the American Martyrs Catholic Church in Scottsburg. He enjoyed watching sports, playing golf and bowling.

He is survived by five brothers, Jerry Niccum of Edinburgh, Paul Niccum of Fort Wayne, Charles Niccum of Rushville, Francis Niccum of Scottsburg and Brian Niccum of Madison; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, David Niccum.

A funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the American Martyrs Catholic Church in Scottsburg. Burial will be in Scottsburg Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 to 10:15 a.m. The rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Jay Schowe

Jay Reid Schowe, 83, of New Washington, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Hampton Oaks Nursing Home in Scottsburg.

He was born Dec. 1, 1930, in Clark Co., to Reid and Bertha Bryan Schowe. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired systems engineer for AT&T. He was a member of River Valley Community Church.

He is survived by two sons, Ronald Schowe of Chandler, Ariz., and Dana Schowe of Chadsford, Pa.; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Grayson Funeral Home in Hanover. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in New Washington.

Martha Young

Martha Ann Young, 82, of North Vernon, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus.

She was born Feb. 20, 1931, in Jennings County, to Ross Raymond and Druzzie M Hamilton Austin. She was a 1949 graduate of Vernon High School. She worked for the Jennings County W.I.C. office part-time for eight years and retired from Regal Rugs, where she had worked as a sewing machine operator. She was a babysitter and caregiver for four years. She worked until she was 77 years old. She was a former member of New Freedom Baptist Church in North Vernon. She enjoyed flowers, going to yard sales, attending church, watching birds, sewing and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two children, Robert Eugene Young of Madison and Edie Schildknecht of North Vernon; one sister, Wilma Birge of Dupont; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon. Burial will be in the New Freedom Baptist Church Cemetery.
