Gene Norman Johnson, 83, of Vevay, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at the Kentuckiana Medical Center in Clarksville.
He was born July 29, 1930, in Rush County, to Alva G. and Susan Elizabeth Scholl Johnson. He was raised in New Salem and was a 1948 graduate of New Salem High School. He served in the United States Navy Reserves from March 28, 1949 to Dec. 27, 1957, serving during the Korean War. He was united in marriage in 1950 to Marjorie McCormick. He co-owned and co-operated Roxano's Restaurant in Vevay from 1986 to 1995. He owned and operated the East-Way Auto Parts Store in Seymour from 1976 to 1985. He was a former customer service representative for Central Rubber & Supply in Indianapolis from 1964 to 1976. He had resided in Vevay since 1985. He was a member of Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion. He enjoyed bird watching, collecting guns and spending time with his dog.
He is survived by his companion of 17 years, Donna L. Richards of Vevay; two sons, Michael G. Johnson of Indianapolis and Mark J. Johnson of Brown County; one daughter, Michelle Schilling of Indianapolis; three step daughters, Sherry L. Francis of Anderson, Tina Leas of Madison and Cate Burton of Lexington, Ky.; one step son, Roy Richards of Vevay; one brother, Thomas Johnson of Greenfield; 10 grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alva Johnson Jr. and Donald Johnson; four sisters, Francis Kirschner, Mary Bogue, Georgia Reynolds and Gertrude Ingle; and one step grandson.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Military honors will be conducted at the funeral home by Vevay Post 185 of the American Legion and the Vevay Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5396.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from noon until the service.

Nadine Sullivan Layton, 85, of Seymour, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, at Seymour Crossing in Seymour.
