James Adams

James E. "Jim" Adams, 76, of Madison, formerly of Vevay, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at The Waters of Clifty Falls.

He was born April 6, 1937, in Knott County, Ky., to Millard and Charma Ferguson Adams. He was raised in Lexington and was a 1956 graduate of Lexington High School. He was united in marriage in 1956 to Edna Mae Miles. He was later united in marriage to Betty C. Pierce on Nov. 4, 1999. He owned and operated with his wife, Betty J & B Construction for two years. He was a former welder for Arvins in Seymour for 17 years. He was employed as a plant supervisor for Robus Product in Madison for 11-and-one-half years. He resided most of his life in the Jefferson and Scott counties. He resided 10 years in Vevay and the past five years in Madison. He was a member of the New Harmony Baptist Church in Austin. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by one son, James Bryan Adams of Bennington; one daughter, Patricia Carol Smith of North Vernon; one sister, Shelby Jean Miles of Madison; one brother, Duel Douglas Adams of Columbus; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty C. Pierce Johnson Adams, who died March 19, 2005; one daughter, Karen Lorraine Adams; his parents; one brother, Bennett Adams; and one sister, Henrietta Lightle.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay. Burial will be in Pleasant Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m.

Thomasita Hayes

Thomasita Hayes, 83, of Louisville, Ky., died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Mercy Sacred Heart in Louisville, Ky.

She was born Jan. 8, 1930, in Sharon, Miss. She entered the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville in 1950. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Ursuline College and a master of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame. In Louisville, she taught at St. Ann from 1952 to 1954 and St. Rita in 1955-1956 parish schools; and at Sacred Heart Academy in 1956-1957, from 1960 to 1969, and in 1989-1990; and at Ursuline Academy in 1957-1958. She also taught at St. Aloysius parish school in 1954-1955 in Shepherdsville, Ky. Most of her teaching career was at Shawe Memorial High School, where she had a 29-year ministry. While at Shawe, she served as a cheerleading coach, dewed and altered cheerleading and basketball uniforms, and oversaw Pep Club activities and the junior prom for many years. She also taught in Cumberland, Md. Sister volunteered at the Ursuline Motherhouse and later was a resident of Mercy Sacred Heart, where she continued in prayer ministry.

She is survived by three brothers, Peter Hayes, Charles Hayes and Ben Hayes, all of Mississippi; one sister, Allie Avery of California; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel, 3115 Lexington Road, Louisville, Ky. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Ursuline Motherhouse today from 4 to 7 p.m. A vigil service will follow the visitation at 7 p.m.

Frank Lanham

Frank Charles "Frankie" Lanham, 71, of Madison, near Rexville, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born April 24, 1942, in Corbin, Ky., to Lloyd and Tokie Hamblin Lanham. He grew up in the Manville area and resided in the Rexville community the past 48 years. He was baptized when he was 8 years old. He was employed as a journeyman with the International Association of Bridge Structural Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers Union Local 22 in Indianapolis, retiring after 34-and-one-half years of service. He farmed most of his life and after retirement he enjoyed welding. He enjoyed gardening, flowers and his tomato plants, working in his garage, fishing, hunting, working and watching NASCAR.

He is survived by two daughters, Sheryl L. Lanham of Crescent City, Calif., and Shauna Skirvin of Rexville; three sons, Kevin Lanham of Madison, Michael Lanham of Tallahassee, Fla., and William Todd Lanham of Madison; one brother, Walter Lanham of Madison; four sisters, Helen Perry of Adrian, Mich., Ruby Hartman of Milton, Ky., Mary Fosteen Payne of Lexington and Eula Flynn of Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Faye Brown Lanham, whom he married Sept. 21, 1959, and who died June 2, 2013; his parents; one sister, Avaleen Wooten; and three brothers, Alonzo Lanham, Elbert "Eb" Lanham and Delbert Lanham.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lanham family home, 4741 W. County Road 925-S, Madison. A celebration of life will follow the service.

Friends may call Saturday at the home from 11 a.m. until the service.
