Now is the time for good men and women to step up and enter the public service arena. The filing period for the May primary has begun and ends Feb. 7.

The primary will be held May 6. The General Election is Nov. 4

The primary election will include seats from the County Council, Board of Commissioners, Hanover Town Council, state convention delegates, county assessor, county auditor, county clerk and sheriff, all township trustee and township advisory board positions, Jefferson County Superior Court judge, Jefferson County prosecutor, and state House and state Senate positions.

No city seats are up for election this year.

Running for public office takes fortitude, a thick skin, a commitment of time, and a desire to improve the quality of life for constituents.

We're fortunate to have many people with those attributes already serving. At all levels of local government we have been blessed with individuals who care deeply about our communities and residents.

While we have individuals with very different political philosophies and ideas of what needs to be done, we've seen very little of the nasty dialogue that sours many to politics. Most of our local officials conduct our business in a respectful way, and we expect voters to follow their lead.

We issue a call to those who have been considering a run for public office to step forward. The next few years will be difficult ones with many challenges. Good people will be needed to help us navigate our way.

Residents can file in the voter registration office on the second floor of the Courthouse from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
