Ethan Wayne Schmitt, 17, of Madison, has earned the Eagle Scout Award, which is the highest advancement award the Boy Scouts of America offers to scouts.

A member of Hoosier Trails Council, Troop 717, Schmitt is one of approximately four percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank.

Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a community, church, or synagogue-related service project to earn his Eagle. Schmitt's project was at Resurrection Lutheran Church, where new landscaping fabric and rock were placed, old edging was removed and the trees and shrubs were all pruned and shaped. Old fencing was also removed and a new fence was built and stained The shelter house, outdoor play equipment and picnic tables were power washed and a recycling bin was built.

Schmitt is a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church and a senior at Madison Consolidated High School. He is the son of Robert and Julie Schmitt of Madison.

A court of honor will be held Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the church. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. All friends are invited.
