Shawe Memorial dropped a 3-2 girls tennis decision to Austin at home on Wednesday.

The Hilltoppers got wins from freshmen Claire Higgins and Megan Hill in singles action but lost the other three matches. Higgins defeated the Eagles' Kalyn Carter 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 2 while Hill beat Lindsey Cornett 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.

"Megan Hill played very well and Claire Higgins did a good job of getting herself back together after slipping in her third set," Shawe coach Steve Sims said.

Senior Taylor Grote fell 7-5, 6-3 to Austin's Meagan Hollan at No. 1 singles. In doubles action, Lauren Cieslinski and Carson Hambrick lost 6-1, 6-0 to Bekka Raichel and Megan Smith at No. 1 and Hannah Storm and Jenna Armstrong fell 6-3, 6-3 to Cheyenne Riley and Holli Reynolds at No. 2.

"Taylor knows she could have played better and had opportunities to win. We need her to step up for us to be successful," Sims said. "It is our first week of season and her first time playing No. 1. I know she'll only get better from here.

"We have to develop some doubles teams," Sims added. "It will be hard for us to win if we have to rely only on singles to get team victories."

Shawe (1-1) hosts Jennings County today.
