Carroll County's boys basketball team out-shot Gallatin County by almost 10 percent and had six fewer turnovers in a win over their border rivals that ended a 14-game losing streak to Gallatin.
Better yet, the win came in Friday's quarterfinals of the All "A" Classic Eighth Region Tournament at Eminence High School to oust the Wildcats from the annual small-school state tourney and send the Panthers into today's semifinals against Trimble County.
Gallatin County out-rebounded Carroll County 32-29 and blocked five shots to the Panthers' one, but in the end shooting and better ball control dictated the outcome of the contest.
Carroll made just 11 turnovers in the game to the Wildcats' 17 and the Panthers snatched 11 steals to just four by Gallatin.
Carroll was 23-of-53 from the field overall (43 percent) and 3-of-9 from beyond the arc to go with an 8-of-10 night at the foul stripe. Gallatin took three fewer shots, making 17-of-50 (34 percent) from the field including 4-of-16 from 3-point range and the Wildcats were 12-of-19 at the foul line.
Tipping off at 4 p.m. to accommodate a Friday triple-header in Eminence in an effort to get the All "A" Regional back on schedule after two nights of weather postponements, Carroll battled to a 15-10 lead after the first quarter and was holding on 27-23 at halftime.
Gallatin whittled that down to a bucket (37-35) after three quarters before Carroll slammed the door shut - and scored its first win over Gallatin since Jan. 9, 2009 - by outscoring the Wildcats 20-15 in the fourth. The win was just Carroll's second in its last 20 meetings with Gallatin County.
Jacob Wise led Carroll with a game-high 19 points while Dakota Corbin had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Isaiah Hogan scored 10, John Michael Adams added 9 and Austin Crowell had six assists.
Kaleb Beckham led Gallatin with 13 points and three assists, Troy Phelps had nine points, 11 rebounds and five blocks, Austin Chapman scored nine and Mason Wilson had seven points and eight rebounds.
Carroll will now play another border rival - Trimble County - in today's semifinals. The Raiders (8-9) defeated Walton-Verona (2-14) 78-71 in overtime in Friday's second quarterfinal in Eminence.
