- The Madison Spring Sprint took place last Saturday.

- The Madison High School Booster Club will hold its next meeting on Thursday, April 17.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. in the high school conference room. The meeting is open to the public.



- Three Hanover College athletes have been honored by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference as players of the week.

Matt Newman, a junior from Bloomington, picked up the award for baseball hitter. The infielder finished 9-of-14 (.643) at the plate with four runs scored, four doubles, a home run, five RBIs, and two walks as the Panthers beat Transylvania and dropped a series to Bluffton.

Robert Bader, a senior from Louisville, picked up the honor in men's golf. Bader fired back-to-back rounds of 70 to finish with a school-record four under par 140 at the Hanover Invitational. The victory was Bader's second in a row at the event as Hanover totaled a school-record 596 at the 36-hole event.

Nick Hermes, a junior from Grayslake, Ill., won the award in men's lacrosse. The attacker scored four goals with a single-game record seven assists in Hanover's 21-0 win over Defiance. In that match, Hermes also set a Hanover single-season record with his 35th goal. He capped the week with one goal in the Panthers' 9-8 overtime win over Elmhurst.



- Shawe's junior varsity tennis team split a pair of matches at Milan on Tuesday in the Hilltoppers' season opener.

The doubles team of McKay Burdette and McKenzie Ott defeated Ashley Cavins and Becca Moore 8-2. Megan Whitman lost 8-1 to Faith Bentle in singles.

On Thursday, Shawe split a pair of matches with Jennings County at home.

McKay Burdette and Megan Whitman defeated Megan Burton and Brittany Thill 8-1 in doubles. McKenzie Ott lost to Linnea Chilma 9-8 (7-3) in singles.

Shawe visits Madison on Saturday.



- Former Carroll County golf standout Quincy Hogan competed in the RedHawk Spring Classic in Athens, Ala., on Tuesday for Cumberland University.

Hogan, a sophomore, shot a 92-88 to tie for 24th. Only three players competed for Cumberland in the match.

Cumberland's next match will be the Mid-South Conference Championships on April 21-23 in Bardstown, Ky.

- The Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge is conducting a special two-day youth turkey hunt event on April 19-20.

The event will select 105 youth by drawing to attend a luncheon and workshop on April 19 from noon to 2 p.m. and participate in a one-day hunt on April 20. The youth must have a responsible adult as a guide but the youth will be the only one allowed to hunt.

To apply for the draw, send a post card with the youth's name and address to Big Oaks NWR, 1661 W JPG Niblo Rd., Madison, IN 47250.



- The Outdoor Women at Big Oaks event will be held on Saturday, June 7 from 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

The one-day event is designed for women to gain valuable outdoor skills and knowledge in an environment that encourages fun and success in the outdoors.

The event will take place at the Historic Old Timbers Lodge at the Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge. Registration forms are available at www.bigoaks.org or call (812) 273-0783.
