Helton, a sophomore, was third in the girls singles competition behind teammate Alexis Brunck and Greenwood Christian’s Alexandra Ross but then went on to survive the Step Ladder series for the semistate championship with Brunck the runner-up.
Helton and Brunck are two of several Madison High School bowlers who have turned in a strong postseason in both girls and boys bowling.
Brunck, a senior, had followed up a 10th place finish at the Columbus Sectional with a first place at the Bloomington Regional before her runner-up at semistate.
On the boys side for Madison, three individual bowlers — Josh Rowlett, Brady Adler and Kollier Pavy — scored podium finishes at both the sectional and regional levels before being shut out at semistate.
Rowlett, a junior, scored the highest finish of the three when he followed up a fourth place at sectional with a first place at regional. Adler, a senior, was third at sectional and second at regional and Pavy, also a senior, was second at sectional and fourth at regional.
Madison’s boys team also picked up a first place overall at sectional when Wesley Stewart placed ninth, Damian Gibson was 10th, Rowlett and Darius Wilking finished tied for 11th and Pavy and Adler were tied for 12th.
The state finals will be Saturday at the Pro Bowl West in Fort Wayne.
