Madison's Jordan Griffith claimed medalist honors and the Cubs scored their third consecutive Shawe Invitational boys golf championship Saturday at Sunrise Golf Course.
Madison carded a score of 310 that was 39 strokes ahead of second place Jennings County at 349.
Providence and Shawe both carded 364 with the Pioneers claiming the runner-up spot due to a lower fifth-man score. South Decatur was fourth at 372, Southwestern shot 383 and Henryville rounded out the field with a 385.
After being denied medalist honors in 2011 when he carded a 2-under 70 to tie for first but lost to Shawe's Nico Mingione in a three-hole playoff, Griffith finally finished as the invitational medalist. Madison's Carson Wattenbarger was the defending individual champion after leading the field with a 74 in 2012.
Griffith's medalist round on Saturday came on a pair of identical 36-stroke nines that were anything but identical. The Madison junior went out with nine pars on the front side but then bogeyed three of his first five holes on the back nine to slide to two-over on the day. He then shot two-under over the final four holes - including a birdie at the par-five 15th and a birdie at the par-four 18th - to get back to even-par 72 on his round.
Griffith led Madison to placing all four scorers in the top five positions in the event. Defending champ Wattenbarger shot a 40-37-77, Dylan Bilz carded a 42-36-78 and Mitchell Seng shot a 43-40-83 for Madison.
Shawe's Joey Mingione, a senior, broke up the Madison pack atop the leaderboard by finishing second with a 40-36-76. His teammate, Alex Reuss, also made the top 10 with a 43-42-85.
Southwestern's top scorer was Colten Shepherd with a 48-42-90.
Madison will be back in action on Saturday at the Bedford North Lawrence Invitational while Shawe will play in the Bishop Chatard Invitational also on Saturday and Southwestern will be in Seymour for the Trinity Lutheran Invitational.
