Hanover men's basketball team returned to winning in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday, blitzing Manchester 90-50 at home.
After dropping out of a first-place tie in the HCAC standings by losing Wednesday at Mount St. Joseph, the Panthers responded big on Saturday. Leading 29-22 with just over five minutes left in the first half, Hanover launched a 17-4 run to seize a 46-26 advantage at halftime. Seven different players scored throughout the run, highlighted by a Tim Bass steal and reverse lay-up with time expiring.
Hanover continued to build on that cushion throughout the second half. Freshman forward Corey Muchmore and sophomore Michael Van Kleunen combined for nine points, increasing Hanover's advantage to 29 in the first seven minutes and then pushing it to 36 with eight minutes to go on a pair of shots by Evan Bingham and another basket by Van Kleunen.
The Panthers finished their assault by tacking on four more points, resulting in the 40-point blowout.
Hanover had five players score in double figures led by Van Kleunen's 14 off the bench. Junior guard Kyle James scored 12 points while Muchmore and V.J. Billups had 11 each. Jacob Steinhart added 10.
Nate Feitshans led Manchester with 11 points.
The Panthers were 35-of-63 from the field for 56 percent and the defense held Manchester to a 15-of-47 performance for only 32 percent.
Hanover (10-5, 6-2 HCAC) hosts first-place Rose-Hulman Wednesday.
Women roll 83-64 at home
Hanover's women defeated Manchester 83-64 Saturday at Collier Arena.
Now winners over the Spartans in eight of their last nine meetings, Hanover grabbed a large lead early and never looked back.
Megan Caudill and Alicia Hopkins combined for 13 points in the opening minutes as the Panthers grabbed a 23-9 lead with 11 minutes left and led 41-24 at halftime after a 17-4 burst fueled the last six minutes.
Manchester would get no closer than 14 in the second half. Up by 14, the Panthers used a 9-2 run and a personal 5-0 spurt by Madison graduate Kelsey Block to put the game away near the midway mark.
Leading 74-48, Hanover ended the day hitting six free throws and a 3-pointer in the final six minutes, putting a stamp on its second-straight HCAC victory.
The Panthers put three players in double figures. Three days removed from a career-high 16 points versus Mount St. Joseph, Caudill set a new high point mark with 19. Jessie Davidson added 14 while Hopkins chipped in 12.
Justine Kruger paced Manchester with 14 points.
Hanover also made strides on both ends of the floor as a team. The Panthers shot an improved 43 percent from the field and continued to shoot well from the free-throw line, going 25-of-30 in the contest. Defensively, the home team forced Manchester into 28 turnovers, 15 of which came from steals.
Hanover (7-8, 5-3 HCAC) visits Rose-Hulman on Wednesday.
