Hanover women's basketball clinched second place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 79-76 win in Saturday's regular season finale at Manchester.

The Panthers also secured the No. 2 two-seed in this week's HCAC Tournament with the victory.

Tied 74-74 with 1:29 left in the game, Hanover freshman and Austin graduate Jessie Davidson drilled a 3-pointer to put the Panthers up 77-74 but Manchester trimmed the deficit to one on a pair of Alyssa Smith free throws.

On the ensuing possession, Hanover missed a 3-point attempt that gave Manchester a shot at the lead but the Spartans turned the ball over with 14 seconds on the clock. Fouled with 11 seconds to go, Megan Caudill hit two free throws that secured a 79-76 Hanover win.

A Manchester 3-point attempt was off the mark at the buzzer.

Hanover shot 43 percent from the field and hit a season-high 11 3-pointers. Alicia Hopkins hit four threes and led the Panthers with 18 points. Megan Caudill scored 11 and Davidson added 10.

Justine Kruger led the Spartans with 18 points. Erynn Meiklejohn and Katie Arterburn scored 17 and 14, respectively.

As the two-seed in the HCAC Tournament, Hanover (16-9, 14-4 HCAC) automatically received a bye into the semfinals. The Panthers face the winner of Rose-Hulman and Franklin on Saturday at Transylvania.

Meanwhile, the junior backcourt duo of Tim Bass and Kyle James propelled Hanover men's basketball to an 80-71 HCAC win Saturday at Manchester.

It was also the final regular season game for both teams.

Bass and James, both from Indianapolis, combined for 39 points and 10 assists in the contest. Bass scored a game-high 22 points and had four assists while James scored 17 and dished out six assists.

After leading 43-35 at halftime, Hanover jumped out to a 55-44 cushion with 12:30 left in the second half. Manchester pulled to within seven on five different occasions over the next five minutes but the Panthers thwarted every comeback attempt and led by as many as 13 before winning by nine.

In addition to Bass and James, the Panthers had two others score in double figures. V.J. Billups had 14 points while Evan Bingham came off the bench for 10 as Hanover was 28-of-50 from the field for 56 percent.

Manchester (5-20, 4-14 HCAC) was led by Brady Dolezal and Jon Thompson with 19 points each. Blake Brouwer added 15.

Hanover (17-8, 13-5 HCAC) finishes the regular season in third place in the HCAC standings to clinch the No. 3 seed in this week's conference tournament.

The Panthers open HCAC Tournament play on Tuesday when they host rival Franklin - the sixth seed and last team to get into the tourney - in the opening round.
