Madison’s softball team scored in every inning and rolled to a 12-2 win over New Washington on Monday at home for the Lady Cubs’ third-straight win.
Senior Alexis Wolf limited the Mustangs to just two hits over five innings while striking out nine and walking none and her teammates backed her up with 10 hits to score the mercy-rule win.
“I really thought Alexis Wolf looked sharp tonight. You could tell the two days off from pitching helped her,” Madison coach Tony Ralston said. “We had to make some adjustments at the plate tonight. With our schedule you are going to see all kinds of pitching and we have to adjust and for the most part we did that. Our base running has to be better with runners at third. Other than that I think we did pretty good job tonight.”
Madison opened the scoring with a solo run in the first when Bailey Dyer drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on Amilia Hall’s sacrifice fly.
After a bunt single by Kennedy Stidham and an RBI double from Erin Laufer put the Lady Cubs ahead 2-0 in the second, they added two runs in the third and four each in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game early.
New Washington scored its two runs in the top of the fourth to break up the shutout.
Kennedy Stidham was 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and three runs scored to lead Madison’s offense while Wolf added a double and scored twice. Dyer had a hit and two RBIs and Paige Young and Hannah Imel each had a hit and an RBI for the Cubs.
Madison (5-4) hosts Floyd Central on Wednesday.
