BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Madison's Ryan Thurston made his first career start for Western Kentucky University Wednesday and worked five scoreless innings of a 3-2 win over Lipscomb at Nick Denes Field.
A freshman left-hander who graduated from Madison last year, Thurston left the game after the fifth inning leading 2-0 and in line for the win. However, the Hilltoppers' surrendered a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to take the decision away from Thurston before WKU scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to win the game 3-2.
Having worked out of the Hilltoppers' bullpen all season, Thurston got the spot start Wednesday and logged a career-high in innings to strike out two and walk seven. He gave up a bunt single in the first and single in the third but erased the runner in the first with the crafty pickoff move that served him so well at Madison.
Western also turned three double plays behind Thurston who threw 77 pitches - 37 for strikes - as the Hilltoppers improved to 16-14 on the season.
