Hanover's men's basketball team was bumped out of a four-way tie for first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 59-51 overtime loss at Defiance (Ohio) on Saturday.
Tied 48-48 early in the extra session, Defiance surged ahead 54-48 with 1:22 on the clock. Tim Bass cut the margin in half on a 3-pointer with 1:09 left, but the Panthers were 0-for-3 from the floor the rest of the way.
Defiance, which has lost six of its last eight against Hanover, led 27-19 late in the first half and had a 29-21 cushion in the opening minute of the second period.
Bass scored six points to key an 11-1 run which allowed the Panthers to take a 32-30 lead with 11:21 on the clock.
Hanover (11-6, 7-3 HCAC) eased ahead 39-34 with 8:28 to go, but the Yellow Jackets chipped away at the margin and forged a 40-40 tie with fewer than five minutes to play in regulation.
The teams went nearly three minutes without a point down the stretch. Defiance, however, eventually grabbed a 46-44 lead on a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left.
Hanover worked the clock and Kyle James was just off the mark with a jumper in the closing seconds. Michael Van Kleunen camped under the bucket, collected the rebound and scored from point-blank range with 5.5 seconds left to force the overtime.
Bass posted game highs with 21 points and four assists to lead Hanover. Bernard Edwards had 19 points for Defiance, which raised its record to 12-4 overall and 8-2 in the HCAC.
After shooting better than 52 percent in five of its last six outings, Hanover was 22-of-63 from the field (34.9 percent) and hit only 2-of-15 3-point attempts (13.3 percent). The Panthers made 5-of-7 free throws (71 percent), but were outscored 20-5 at the charity stripe.
