Owen County blew open a close game with a 35-point third quarter and rolled to an 88-63 win over Trimble County in boys basketball Tuesday in Bedford.

The visiting Rebels led only 35-26 at the break but exploded in the second half. Trimble was unable to keep pacer despite a pair of 20-point games from Evan Long and Josh Rexroat.

Owen County, which led wire-to-wire, held a 9-0 lead before a 3-pointer from Michael Dunaway finally put the Raiders on the board. The closest Trimble was able to get after the opening minutes was within five (18-13) early in the second period.

Owen County's 6-foot-8 forward, Carson Williams, one of the top sophomores in the nation, had a pair of monster dunks early en route to a 30-point performance. Teammate Hunter Trenary popped in six 3-pointers for half of his 24 points.

"(Williams is) very strong inside and you have to give him attention. That opens the door for some other good shooters," Trimble coach Johnny Leep III said. "He has a very good drive off the top and you know he's going to get at least 20 points on you."

After Owen County outscored the Raiders 18-10 in the opening period, Trimble County battled back to make it a closer contest before halftime. Long had eight second-quarter points and Andrew Young added five. Williams finished the half with 18.

Owen began gradually pulling away in the third quarter. Trimble continued to hit shots, but the Rebels' were simply overpowering while building a 70-46 lead heading into the final period.

Owen County outscored the Raiders 18-17 in the fourth.

"They were able to start the game and the second half strong," Leep said. "We're only about 18 to 20 minutes strong right now. Until we get to where we're able to play a strong 32 minutes, we're going to be struggling."

Leep was pleased with the performance of Rexroat, especially in the second half.

"Josh is a focus of teams' defenses. He really battled in the second half," Leep said. "I was also pleased with the play of Andie Young. He was playing out of position at point guard and he did it with a smile on his face - he could have jacked up shots but he was getting the ball inside."

Trimble (0-3) plays its first district game Friday at Oldham County.
