Trimble County withstood a furious Walton-Verona comeback that sent Friday's boys All "A" Classic Eighth Region quarterfinal matchup into overtime and then steadied itself down the stretch to beat the Bearcats 78-71 and advance to tonight's semifinals at Eminence High School.
Weather permitting, Trimble County will now face border-rival Carroll County in the semifinals at 6 p.m. in Eminence.
Trimble led 35-25 at halftime and 45-39 after three quarters before Walton-Verona exploded for 25 fourth-quarter points to knot the game 64-64 at the end of regulation.
But the Raiders still had plenty of fight left and Walton-Verona was facing deep foul trouble. Trimble dispatched the Bearcats with 8-of-12 shooting at the foul line in the overtime period.
"Huge team effort!" Trimble head coach Johnny Leep III said of the win. "We withstood a furious comeback and collected ourselves in the overtime period to get a hard-fought win."
Trimble County was led by guards Andrew Young and Evan Long with 20 points each. Young, a senior, did his damage throughout while Long, a junior, scored seven points in the extra period to slam the door on the Bearcat comeback.
"Andrew Young had a monster game for us running the point and defending the other team's best player all night long," Leep said. "He rebounded the ball, created for his teammates, and hit several big shots when we needed them.
"Evan Long also had a huge night making shots and taking the ball strong to the rim," Leep said. "He had probably the strongest take of his career with the score tied in overtime. He went strong the basket and finished while getting fouled by two defenders."
The Raiders used only seven players. Starting guard Dusty Wyssbrod fouled out, but the Trimble bench came up big as Zach Brooks scored eight points including 6-of-6 shooting at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
"Zach Brooks came off the bench and brought a lot of energy and effort and hit clutch free throws down the stretch when we need them," Leep said.
Walton-Verona was led by Kyle Kinmon's game-high 22 points while Shea Evans and Chance Sullivan had 15 points each with Evans' buzzer-beating 3-pointer sending the game into overtime.
