Southwestern's swim teams suffered a pair of losses in a tough tri-meet at Jennings County on Tuesday.
Jennings won both meets. In the girls meet, the Panthers scored 143 points to Batesville's 108 and Southwestern's 67. In the boys meet, Jennings had 141 points to Batesville's 121 and Southwestern's 48.
"Jennings County and Batesville are always very strong teams, but we really didn't do as well as we'd hoped to do," Southwestern coach Shelly Hamilton said. "We had 19 best times during the meet, but we felt that we could have done better with some of the 'little things' that are a part of every good performance."
Jordan Worcester picked up Southwestern's lone win on the night with a victory in the girls 500-yard freestyle in 6:02.97. Lakin Henderson was second in the girls 100-yard breaststroke in 1:20.66.
Other top finishes for the Southwestern girls were: Worcester, Gianna Bennett, Henderson and Meredith Webber, third, 200 medley relay, 2:18.20 and third, 400 free relay, 4:27.50; Rebekah Anderson, fourth, 200 free, 243.35; Henderson, fourth, 200 IM, 2:41.49; Worcester, fourth, 100 back, 1:16.49; Bennett, fourth, 100 breast, 1:23.17 and fifth, 200 IM, 2:43.09; Sarah Schroeder, fifth, 200 free, 2:46.21; Webber, fifth, 50 free, 30.65 and fifth, 100 free, 1:11.29; Cassidy Weaver, fifth, 100 fly, 1:46.72; Weaver, Elizabeth Scianni, Anderson and Zaynah Watson, fifth, 200 free, 2:21.33; and Anderson, Jennah Butters, Scianni and Taylor Suthard, fifth, 400 free, 5:25.77.
Top finishes for the Southwestern boys were: Zachary Hamilton, third, 100 breast, 1:17.04; Mitchel Swafford, fourth, 200 IM, 2:39.85 and fourth, 100 fly, 1:05.81; Nathan Anderson, Hamilton, Swafford and Travis Higham, fourth, 200 medley relay, 2:04.29 and fourth, 400 free, 4:14.89; Dylan Truesdell, fifth, 200 free, 2:39.00; Higham, fifth, 50 free, 50 free, 28.62 and fifth, 100 breast, 1:27.94; Jacob Grayson, fifth, 100 free, 1:07.56; Jacob Shaffer, fifth, 500 free, 7:21.14; Anderson, fifth, 100 back, 1:20.22; and Ryan Furnish, Shaffer, Truesdell and Grayson, fifth, 200 free, 2:05.26 and fifth, 400 free relay, 4:38.76.
"Jacob Shaffer stepped up and swam two events that he never would have dreamed of swimming a year ago, but he's improved significantly this season," Hamilton said. "We're going to work on some basics for the next few practices. Hopefully, that will make a difference in the meets next week. It's still early in the season, so we'll see what we can do to improve."
Southwestern hosts Providence on Thursday.
Floyd Central sweeps Cubs
Madison's swim teams dropped a pair of matches to Floyd Central at home on Tuesday.
The girls lost135-32 while the boys lost 129-40.
Hayden McMahon won the boys 50-yard freestyle and was second in the 100-yard freestyle. Sean Brink finished third in the 500-yard freestyle.
In the girls race, Tess Lemen was second in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 500-yard freestyle.
Madison hosts Greensburg on Thursday.
