For the second time in two days, Trimble County boys basketball fell to DeSales in the Henry County Invitational, 61-43 in Saturday's consolation game.
DeSales beat Trimble 82-40 on Friday but Trimble fared much better a day later. The Raiders led 12-8 after the first quarter using a stifling 3-2 zone that forced DeSales into taking outside shots before the Colts went on a 19-5 run in the second quarter to take a 27-17 lead at halftime.
The two teams traded buckets in the third frame as Trimble stayed within striking distance at 45-34 but DeSales' 16-9 fourth quarter slammed the door.
"Obviously we wanted the win but I am very proud of the team's effort," said Trimble assistant coach Mike Stewart, who served as head coach with Johnny Leep out with the flu. "We got better against an oustanding team. We went into the game not wanting to allow cuts or drives to the lane and for the most part we did that. They made some adjustments against our zone and were able to knock down some contested threes."
The Raiders put two players in double figures: Evan Long with 14 points and Dusty Wyssbrod with 11. Stewart pointed out that it was an entire team effort.
"The starters and our bench were committed to a team effort," Stewart said. "We executed our plan and played very well."
DeSales (10-3) also had two players score in double-digits. Shawn Sullivan led all scorers with 16 points while Dillon Sievert added 10.
Trimble County (3-8) visits Walton-Verona on Friday.
