Southwestern girls basketball lost to unbeaten Lawrenceburg 49-39 Wednesday night on the road.
Lawrenceburg (5-0) got off to a fast start to mount a 9-0 run before the Rebels were able to put a point on the scoreboard. The Tigers led 13-4 after the first quarter and maintained that nine-point advantage heading into halftime 21-12.
"We just didn't come out fired up in the first quarter and we've struggled with that all season," Southwestern head coach Kenny Garrett said. "They got up on us and we were 0-of-7 from the free throw line in the first quarter which shouldn't happen. We just need to switch some things up and start gaining momentum in the first half."
After a rousing halftime talk by Garrett, the Rebels looked much improved in the third quarter and trimmed the deficit to 30-25 late. But on the next two possessions, Southwestern allowed five offensive rebounds that led to a 3-pointer and then turned the ball over on the next play to allow Lawrenceburg to sink a bucket at the buzzer and extend its lead back out to 10 at 35-25.
Southwestern fought back in the fourth and again cut the deficit to 45-39 but Lawrenceburg sank 7-of-9 free throws late in the period to secure the 49-39 win.
"We played much better in the second half," Garrett noyed. "We came out after half and played with much more hustle and effort."
Cass Lawson led Southwestern with 11 points while Allison Bushong chipped in 10 points.
Southwestern (2-4) travels to Shawe on Friday night for an Ohio River Valley Conference matchup at Meny Gym.
