The Madison-Jefferson County Animal Shelter currently has a number of dogs and cats and kittens available for adoption.

Matthew, a 3- to 4-month-old Husky/Australian Shepherd mix is ready for a family to call his own! He loves attention and squeaky toys and is ready to learn some manners and make his place in the world. Matthew is neutered and up to date on all vaccinations so his adoption fee is $100. Matthew’s sister, Mackenzie, is also waiting for her forever home!

Jackie is a beautiful gray short-haired, 1- to 3-year-old cat. She loves to explore and get her head scratched. Jackie is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations so her adoption fee is $35 since the Humane Society helps defray the cost of adopting a cat!.

Anyone wanting to meet Matthew or Jackie should call the shelter at 812-273-1788 or email at to make an appointment. Appointment days and times are Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 1 p.m.

Animals that are neutered and vaccinated for rabies are listed on if you would like to see what other animals are available for adoption.

The shelter appreciates donations being left outside its door. The current needs include plain clay cat litter, and both dry and canned puppy and kitten food.

Those with missing pets can call or email a complete description of the pet, when and where it was last seen, the owner’s name and contact information, and a picture of the pet. Pets are held for three days before they are made available for adoption. Animals should not be abandoned outside of the shelter or dropped off at the shelter after hours.
