Indiana State Police are investigating the death of a Bartholomew County Jail inmate last weekend.

The Bartholomew County Sheriffs Department called on detectives from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post to conduct an investigation into the death of an inmate Sunday at the jail in Columbus, Indiana.

The investigation began shortly after 6 p.m. when a male inmate, Gregory A. Leonard, 47, Columbus, was found unresponsive in the jail. The inmate was provided medical care and transported to Columbus Regional Hospital where he was then pronounced dead.

Having an outside police agency like the ISP investigate is a normal practice when a death occurs inside a correctional facility.

The investigation is ongoing and Leonard’s family has been notified.
