Former Seymour officer hired as SRO

Teltow began his career as a Jailer in Jennings County and while working on his degree, he was employed by the university as a Campus Sworn Cadet on the campus of IUPUC. Teltow was most recently a Patrolman with the Seymour Police Department in Jackson County where he served his community. “In my work with SPD, I had to be extremely flexible and dynamic which pushed me to become a quick thinker with the ability to handle situations that come unexpectedly,” he shared.

While relatively young in his career, Teltow feels as though he can apply his skills in a new role in order to help create a safe working and learning environment for faculty and students at MCS. When asked why he chose a School Resource Officer position, Teltow calmly shared “I believe in building relationships and a proactive approach versus attempting to redirect adult behaviors learned over time. I know that mental health must be a large part of what we must focus on and I think my experience lends

itself to a perspective that could be helpful daily, as well as if we ever find ourselves in a situation where we must rely on our training to keep everyone safe. My preference is young people, as the future is bright!”

“Officer Teltow’s calm demeanor and de-escalating skills will be beneficial to our school district and community,” shared School Safety Coordinator and SRO Officer Jacob McVey. “I’m excited to have another trained law enforcement professional to assist in keeping our district safe, building positive relationships, and being proactive in the schools.”

Teltow will be working closely with McVey. Already a Tier 1 trained officer, he will complete the required SRO training in June.

“When I talked with Officer McVey I could hear the passion he has for his work and for the schools and was impressed with the work being done to keep them safe,” Teltow recalled. “I felt needed, I have heard great things about Madison…I think it is a good city to be in.”
