Monday’s head-on collision involving two vehicles on State Road 3 claimed the life of a Jennings County man and injured a Scott County teen, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

After confirming notification of family Wednesday, Chief Deputy Josh Taylor confirmed that the deceased driver was Jeremy Michael Jones Jr., 25, of Jonesville, Indiana, and the injured driver was a 17-year-old male juvenile from Scott County, Indiana.

Jones was traveling north in State Road 3 on his way home to North Vernon in a Ford F-150 when a southbound Kia Optima driven by the juvenile crossed left of center and hit Jones’ pickup truck head-on at about 6 p.m. on Monday. The accident occurred near the intersection of Henry Road just after dark but the stretch of highway is straight and conditions were good.

Jones was transported to Scott County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The juvenile was flown to University Hospital in Louisville with broken bones and severe injuries to his lower extremities. A report on his condition was not available.

According to Taylor, the accident is still under investigation but no charges are pending. However, toxicology tests are being run on both drivers as in all cases where injuries are fatal.

The accident was investigated by the sheriff’s department and Indiana State Police accident reconstructionists. Emergency Medical Services and the Deputy Volunteer Fire Departments also responded to the scene.

Funeral services for Jones are at 1 p.m. today at Dove-Sharp and Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon.
