Madison Police checking the welfare of a woman and a small child in a car at a city park on Thursday charged the woman with felony drug possession and neglect of a dependent.
Madison Police were responding to a request for a welfare check at the Rucker Sports Complex on Madison’s Hilltop at 5:48 p.m. after a caller reported seeing an individual in a vehicle who appeared to be nodding off and displaying erratic movements.
Officers Cameron Blankenship, Zack Nicholson and Nichole Midgett responded and located the vehicle in question and identified the adult occupant as Alexus Brooke Chatham, 28, of Madison, as well as a small child present in the vehicle.
Upon further investigation the officers discovered illegal drugs in Chatham’s vehicle and she was arrested and taken into custody without incident at that time.
Chatham faces preliminary charges of Maintaining a Common Nuisance, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of a Legend Drug and Neglect of a Dependent, all Level 6 felonies. She was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
In addition, the Department of Child Services was contacted regarding the small child.
