Benjamin Palmer “Ben” Coomes, 77, of Eminence, Kentucky, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021.

He was born on May 11, 1944, in Shelbyville, Kentucky, to John W. Coomes and Lola Thurman Coomes. He was a 1962 graduate of Eminence High School where he served as class president. He graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1967 and the University of Louisville School of Law in 1970. He served as an attorney and public defender for many years in multiple northern Kentucky circuits, as president of the Municipal Attorneys Association in 1974 and Senior Counselor of KY in 2018. He was a 36-year member of the Eminence School Board and received the Warren Proudfoot Award for Outstanding School Board Member in Kentucky in 2007. He received the Irvin Hayden Award from Eminence Schools, was a member and long-time moderator of Eminence Baptist Church where he served as a deacon since 1973 and was named Deacon Emeritus in 2017. He was an honorary Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Poe Coomes of Eminence; a daughter, Cathy Moore of Independence, Kentucky; a son, Benny Coomes of Smithfield, Kentucky; two brothers, John W. “Johnny” Coomes II and William R. “Billy Bob” Coomes, both of Eminence; and four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 22, at Eminence Baptist Church with burial at Eminence Cemetery there. Visitation is 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at Prewitt Funeral Home in New Castle, Kentucky, and 9 a.m. until time of service Monday at the church.
