William Lee “Billy” Hayes, 78, of Madison, Indiana, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021, at his home near Madison.
He was born May 26, 1942, in Trimble County, Kentucky, to Alvin and Dorothy Opal Singer Hayes. He resided most of his life in Jefferson County, Indiana, and was of the Baptist faith. He received his GED and welding certification from Ivy Tech. He worked early in life in construction and then as a body man at Brogan Chevrolet for 10 years. He then retired after 30 years service with Rotary Lift/ VSG as a welder. He was a member of the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 Sons of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, coon hunting, riding horses, playing cards, socializing, gardening and working on the farm.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Jayne “Jaynie” Gividen Hayes of Madison; two daughters, Wanda Hale and Sherry Lynn Hayes, both of Madison; his son, William Todd Hayes of Madison; a brother, Robert Eugene “Bobby” Hayes of Vevay, Indiana; a sister, Darlene Mefford of Milton, Kentucky; his stepbrothers, Ray Scully of Deputy, Indiana and Cecil Liter of Bedford, Kentucky; and six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Georgetta “Peachie” Hayes; a daughter, Billie Lynn Hayes; three sisters, Mary Jane Curling, Wilma Totten, and Dorothy Joann Gay; and a brother, John “Pete” Hayes.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre-Hanover Chapel, in Hanover. Interment will follow in the Olive Branch Cemetery near Madison. Visitation is 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and noon until time of services Monday at the funeral home.
