Danny R. Callis Sr., 71, of Madison, Indiana, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2021, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison.
He was born on Aug. 23, 1950, in Madison, to Edgar A. and Mary VanWye Callis. He served in the US Army, achieving‘ the rank of Sergeant. He married Carolyn J. Coker on June 16, 1970, in Madison. He was a cook at the Key West Shrimp House for 28 years and was also a farmer and mechanic. In his spare time, he enjoyed working on cars, fishing, hunting, playing horseshoes, camping, walking, playing cornhole, listening to country music, and watching MASH. He was a former member of the Eagles Lodge and a lifetime member of the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 American Legion, where he served on the Honor Guard for several years.
He is survived by his wife of Madison; his children, Dawn Geisler, Elisha Sullivan, both of Madison, and Danny R. Callis Jr. of Lexington, Indiana; his sisters, Susie Stewart, Verna Griffin and Deanna Callis, all of Hanover and Alice Cummings, of Brownstown, Indiana; his brothers, Dallas Callis of Medora, Indiana, Gene Callis of Vevay, Indiana, Charles Callis of Port Royal, Kentucky, and Mark Callis of Madison; and 13 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, at the Lytle Welty Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Vail Chapel, on Madison’s hilltop, with interment to follow in Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison. Visitation is 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9 and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home.
