Iva “Jean” Ison Perkins, 96, of Louisville and formerly of Madison, Indiana, died Sunday, May 30, 2021, at the Christian Care Community in Louisville.
She was born on Dec. 8, 1924, in Linefork, Kentucky, to Byrd and Clara Nolan Ison. She was raised in the hills of Eastern Kentucky and overcame extreme poverty. She studied hard and graduated from Kingdom Come High School, in Linefork, in 1942, and went on to graduate from the Methodist Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She was a talented surgical nurse and served in Veterans Affairs facilities and hospitals until she married Roy D. Perkins and left employment to care for her two children. Beginning in 1956 she was a homemaker and den mother who was known for her cooking skills and for being a hard worker and a fashionable dresser. She loved playing Rook, Runs-n-Sets and Canasta and was very competitive and also loved working jigsaw puzzles. She was a member of both the Dupont Baptist Church in Dupont, Indiana, and the Pewee Valley Baptist Church in Peewee Valley, Kentucky. She lived her last years at the Christian Care Community in Louisville.
Survivors include her children, Teri G. Perkins Sparks and Mark S. Perkins; nine grandchildren, Micah Perkins, Rebekah Perkins Deline, Tim Perkins, Steve Perkins, Phil Perkins, Jon Perkins, Naomi Perkins, Grace Perkins Blanchard, Christi Perkins Johnson, Tasha Sparks and Emily Sparks Murray; and 19 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Harold Ison.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 6, at the Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville. A graveside ceremony will follow at the Dupont Cemetery in Dupont at 4:30 p.m. Visitation is noon until time of services Sunday at the funeral home.
