Joanne Mary Teifer Hodges, 85, of Huntsville, Alabama and formerly of Madison, Indiana, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021, in Huntsville.

She was born on Jan. 27, 1935, in Ecorse, Michigan, to Edwin Teifer and Donna Orton Teifer. She graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in River Rouge, Michigan and married Joseph T. Hodges on July 26, 1952 and they had six children. She loved volunteering and working for churches — first at Our Lady of Lourdes in River Rouge then at St. Mary Magdalen in Melvindale, Michigan, St. Patrick Church in Madison, the Church of the Nativity in Leawood, Kansas and most recently at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Huntsville. She was an excellent seamstress, worked as a tax preparer, as deputy to a county clerk and as a customer service representative. She loved playing bridge and other card games, was interested in politics and enjoyed dancing.

Survivors include her husband of 68 years; five children, Daniel Hodges of Madison, Stephen Hodges of Indianapolis, Donna Shergy of Huntsville, Joseph Hodges of Washington Grove, Maryland and Jane Shivers of Madison, Alabama; and 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Lucille Decker and Barbara Chinavare; and a son, Patrick Gallagher.

Family services will be private with a celebration of life held at a future date to be determined. Memorials may be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church Perpetual Adoration Chapel fund.
