John David Burton, 73, of North Vernon, Indiana, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, after a battle with cancer.

He was born Nov. 16, 1947, in Middletown, Ohio, to Adah Burton Byard and Woodrow Burton Sr. He lived most of his life in Jennings County, Indiana, attended grade school in Brewersville, Indiana, and graduated high school from North Vernon in 1966. He worked for the State School at Muscatatuck State Hospital and retired after 35 years in 2003. He met his wife, Sara Sue Shelton, there and they were married in 1994 and had two children. They enjoyed many trips to the Great Smoky Mountains, where they would look for bears and pottery, as well as a trip to Mount Rushmore where they also visited Sturgis, South Dakota, for bike week. He loved spending time with family, cooking hogs and beans over a fire, cleaning up his truck, mushroom hunting and hanging out.

Survivors include his wife; his children, David Burton and Julie Vance; his stepchildren, Melinda Swinney and Kimberly Evans; two siblings Clay Burton and Shirley Branson; and three grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Woodrow Burton Jr., and a granddaughter.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon with burial at Vernon Cemetery in Vernon Indiana. Visitation is 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
