John Russell Jones, 72, of Madison, Indiana, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, at the Norton Hospital in Louisville after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 14, 1948, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, to Marvin A. and Imogene “Gene” Wester Jones. He graduated in 1966 from Elizabethtown High School and later from the University of Kentucky. He began his career with Baptist Hospital in Louisville as a lab tech and later worked at Carroll County Memorial Hospital in Carrollton, Kentucky, and Scott Memorial Hospital in Scottsburg, Indiana. He then retired after 25 years in the lab at King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison but continued working some part time after retirement. He loved to have fun and tease, was always smiling and never met a stranger. He loved his dog, Coco, and was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his membership in the Chelsea Bass Masters Club, where he served as secretary and treasurer. He enjoyed visits to Abbey Road in Louisville and annual trips to Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife. He was a University of Kentucky sports fan and member of First Baptist Church in downtown Madison.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 29 years, Kathy Sue Henley Jones of Madison; his daughter, Susan Jones Pylant of Evansville, Indiana; his sister, Leah Donna Crabtree. of Elizabethtown; his granddaughter, Mindy Pylant of Evansville; and several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews, cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. Interment will follow in the Fairmount Cemetery in Madison. Visitation is 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. until time of services Sunday at the funeral home.
