Kenneth Leroy “Ken” Pagel, 88, of Madison, Indiana, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2020, at the Norton Hospital in Louisville.

He was born April 23, 1932, in Saginaw, Michigan, to Charles F. and Magdalena “Lena” Stanzel Pagel. He was raised Catholic, began his working career on the family’s dairy farm and graduated in 1950 from Saginaw High School. He then graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in accounting and earned his MBA from Wayne State University. He was inducted into the US Army on Nov. 4, 1952, in Detroit, and rose to the rate of Corporal during the Korean War, serving Company B in the Quarter Master Division. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 8, 1954, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. He returned home and began a career in 1968 with Grote Industries working in accounting and retired in 1997 as the Chief Financial Officer. He remained on the board and as a consultant for Grote until retiring in 2017. He had married Carolyn Ann Thomas on Aug. 28, 1975, in Madison, and they enjoyed traveling, going to horse races and were active in Prince of Peace Catholic Church. He was an avid golfer, devout fan of Michigan State sports, loved fishing and socializing with friends and family. In his spare time he volunteered for Historic Madison Inc., was involved in the Shawe Booster Club, the Twin Spires Club and was a long-time member of the former Madison Country Club.

Survivors include his son, Kenneth W. Pagel of Camden, Tennessee; his daughters, Donna Jean Walton of Battle Creek, Michigan and Dr. Kelly Morgan of St. John’s, Michigan; his stepsons, Stephen Scott Fitzpatrick of Louisville and Mark Allan Fitzpatrick of Madison; his stepdaughter, Jennifer Fretland of Lincoln, Massachusetts; his companion, Marge Harmon and her family of Madison; and six grandchildren, a step grandson; eight great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 37 years on Sept. 29, 2012; and his brothers, Charles F. Pagel and Melvin Pagel.

A private funeral Mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 7, at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in downtown Madison. Interment will follow in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison. Private family visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre in Madison. The Rosary will be prayed privately at 10 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Private military honors will be conducted on Monday at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel by the Major Samuel Woodfill Post No. 9 of the American Legion with the playing of Taps by his granddaughter.
